Cantonese Sweet & Sour Tofu

Trying out dishes from different cuisines is always such a fun and for this month's cuisine for IFC is Cantonese cuisine. Was awed by the dishes given for trying, but due to time constraint I went for Cantonese Sweet & Sour Chicken but substituted the chicken for tofu. The end was result was mind blowing with sweetness, sourness and spiciness kicking your palate. Thank you Saras of saras yummy bites for choosing this wonderful recipe. lets move on to the recipe



You need:

Tofu                                 680gms
Sesame oil                       1 tbsp
Red onion (large)             1 nos
Cucumber                       1nos
Green Pepper( small)       1nos
Red Pepper                     1nos
Pineapple chunks             1/2cup (optional)
Oil   for deep frying



Sauce:


Tomato ketchup              4tbsp
Chilli sauce                      3tbsp
Plum sauce                      3tsp
Light Soy Sauce              1tsp
Water                             2tbsp
Sugar                              1tsp
(you can substitute plum sauce with 1tbsp ketchup + 1 or 2 tsp vinegar + 1 tsp brown sugar)

Marinate:

Corn flour                1tsp
Custard powder       1tsp
Egg                          1nos
Salt                          1/2 tsp
White pepper to taste



To Dredge:

All purpose flour            3tbsp
Corn flour                      3tbsp
Rice flour                       3tbsp

Preparation:

Dice the vegetables into 1" pieces.
Cut the tofu into 1" pieces.
Mix the ingredients under marinate. Toss the tofu in it and marinate for 10-15 minutes.
Prepare the sauce by mixing the ingredients under Sauce  in a small saucepan , cook them for about 5- 10 minutes.
Heat oil in a kadai



Mix the ingredients under Dredge, toss the tofu , remove excess flour and fry them in hot oil, Remove them with a slotted spoon, keep aside.
Now in a separate kadai heat the sesame oil, toss in the vegetables (except pineapple) for about 2-3 minutes, pour in the sauce and bring it to a boil, add the fried tofu and mix well, Stir in the pineapple chunks , mix well, remove from heat 
Serve hot

Note:
You can substitute  Chicken for tofu , Follow the steps but you have to fry the chicken twice
