Healing Foods- China Grass/ Agar- Agar Event Announcement

Once again Iam here with an event announcement, Healing foods food event is being guest hosted in Kitchen Samraj this month. Healing Foods event is a wonderful event started by Siri of Siri's Corner. Check out her blog for more delicious delicacy's. This month Ive chosen Agar- Agar or China Grass

Agar-agar is a gelatinous substance derived from red algae. They are mainly used as an ingredient in desserts throughout Asia.Agar (agar-agar) can be used as a laxative, a vegetarian gelatin substitute, a thickener for soups, in jellies, ice cream and other desserts, as a clarifying agent in brewing, and for paper sizing fabrics.
The word "agar" comes from the Malay word agar-agar (meaning jelly). It is also known as kantenChina grass, orJapanese isinglass. The most common term used for this is China Grass n in Tamil we call them Kadal paasi.

Culinary Uses:

Agar-agar is a natural vegetable gelatin. White and semi-translucent, it is sold in packages as washed and dried strips or in powdered form. It can be used to make jellies, puddings, and custards. For making jelly, it is boiled in water until the solids dissolve. Sweetener, flavouring, colouring, fruit or vegetables are then added and the liquid is poured into moulds to be served as desserts , or incorporated with other desserts, such as a jelly layer in a cake.

In Philippine cuisine, it is used to make the jelly bars in the various gulaman refreshments or desserts such as sago gulaman (aka gulaman at sago), buko pandanagar flan, halo-halo, the various Filipino fruit saladsblack gulaman, and red gulaman. One use of agar in Japanese cuisine is anmitsu, a dessert made of small cubes of agar jelly and served in a bowl with various fruits or other ingredients. In Indian cuisine, agar agar is known as "China grass" and is used for making desserts. In Burmese cuisine, a sweet jelly known as kyauk kyaw.
